It was just raining hard outside, and I could hear thundering out of the window. The sky looked like the color of fire against a darkening sky — the thick clouds seemed to have taken on an impossibly menacing shade. Suddenly, there was a loud bang followed by a thump of lightning, followed by some static. I sat down at my computer, turned off all notifications, and tried not to look away from the screen as I waited for them to appear on my TV screen. Then came what felt like several minutes later, that familiar sound from the air conditioner blowing our tiny house around. After about ten more seconds of silence, they started blaring again. “Woof! Woof! Woof, wooow!” The whole office froze. My dog jumped onto my lap and licked me. A second or two passed and suddenly three, then four, five, six—the noise got louder, raucous, and annoying. This time they had no idea how to react, so many people were looking through their phones to see if someone else had spotted the source of this commoti...
